Worst art market in the county!....  Chicago. 

The galleries in Chicago do not advertise in any national art magazine.  That is to say that they do not promote the artist that they are featuring each month in there gallery space.  They do however take a 50% or more commission on any works that do sell.  That is a steep cut into the artist pocket and a steep brokerage fee for someone investing in art.  Going rate for stocks and bonds is 3%.  Makes buying art in Chicago a bad buy.

High School art student working on a five value self portrait study.  She is working darkest values to lightest value. Medium is acrylic paint. The value scale being used is at the top of the students work.

Painting is all about honesty.  If you can fake that, you've got it made.

This is an example of high school pencil works by an awesome art students.  He is currently at the American Academy of Art in Chicago.  Great work.  Keep it up.

This is an Award winning image by M. Zuska.  It is mixed medium and concept.  Watercolor paint and ink were used in its creation.  The Award he won was from the West Suburban Art League  2013.  Very nice job.

This is a pastel portrait of my nephew Kevin.  This was done using Rembrant soft pastel on Canson pastel paper.  18X24,

This is a sample St. Pats art project that my first grade students did yesterday.  The project works with current identifiable shapes, with line patterns in the spaces.  We worked on Green paper and black marker to achieve the effect.  Templates were used to trace the shamrocks.

When it comes to spelling… it takes a creative genius like me to spell words differently each time. 

This is a lightning shot from Door county Wis.  The camera is a Nikon, shutter speed dial set to the B setting and the aperture at F/8.  Time 90 seconds.  The camera was mounted on a tripod.

WHAT A LUCKY SHOT!  "its not luck"

"Sculpture" defined as,  something you bump into when you step back to look at a painting on the wall.

This is a recent oil painting landscape.  My plan is to give it to River Casinon in Desplains to replace the piece of crap abstract they have hanging on the second floor.

The world is full of apathy, but so what?

This is a students self portrait.  It was drawn from a photograph, and produced in color pencil.  The drawing show great sensitiveity to the skin tones.  The work is an excellet example of work completed by a junior in high school.

I rearly have time to think about what I do for a living.  Then I realise... Hey I am an Art teacher.... Thats really cool.  Your not and it sucks to be you.

S.M. Lappe lives in the Chicago area where he teaches art. He has been writing for ten years and his photographs have been published in the Chicago Tribune. Inspired by his students and his own children, his next book is a self-illustrated children’s book.
